My husband and I just recently decided to go on a vacation without our daughter. We are very fortunate to have awesome parents that were very eager to take care of our little girl, Sophia. As I went through all of the things that I needed to pack and making sure that Sophia had everything she needed for her week with Abuela the sudden anxiety sunk in. What if something happened to my husband and me? What would happen with Sophia?
When Sophia was born we had a conversation with our siblings about wanting them to take care of her in the event something happened to us. However, working in a law firm, I realize this is not enough. Although we had a conversation with them, we did not really vocalize those expectations with anyone else. With not having documents that state what should happen with Sophia if we are no longer around, we have no plan in place. I don’t believe that our families would fight over who would get her but there is always a possibility. I certainly do not want my daughter to have to go through that on top of no longer having us around.
I feel like this is a topic that many parents have come across. If they are anything like myself, they have thought they should get a plan in place but they keep putting it off. I am 100% guilty of putting this off and I work in a law firm that does estate planning! If I have learned anything since I have started working at the Deliberato Law Center it is that I should not put this off. I have seen way too many people come into our office wishing that they had put a plan in place way sooner. I have seen families get torn apart because they could not agree on what should happen.
No one is guaranteed tomorrow and I try to remind myself that regularly. So as I write this blog I have decided I need to stop putting my plan off until tomorrow. I want to make sure that if something were to happen to me, my family is going to be okay because I have put together a plan for them. I want to know that my daughter is going to have all of her family members on the same page and that no one is arguing over what her future should look like. I want to make that decision. I certainly don’t want the courts to do that for me. For as much planning that I do for the little things in our life, like vacations, it’s time to make sure that I have the most important plan set.
I strongly encourage all parents to take the time to put this plan in place. We do educational workshops that can educate you on all of the estate planning options that are available. Matt will then sit down with you at no cost, and help you come up with a plan.
So will I see you at the next workshop or will you keep waiting until tomorrow?
